Great Antique Civil War Navy FID, Nautical, Maritime, Ship, Sails, Whaling Maine
Large 1840 - 1860 Period Wooden Naval FID, Used in Splicing Ropes on Warships and Whaling Vessels, From MAINE COASTAL ESTATE. Civil War or earlier wooden naval fid, a long, tapered, turned piece of hardwood used in splicing or undoing strands of rope in the heavy lines used on the old wooden ships. The small end was put in between the strands and gradually worked until the wider part loosened them sufficiently for finger work. This one is large, about 12" long and about 1 1/2" diameter at the top. This size would have been used for some of the larger ropes and lines. Appears to be made of oak for durability, and it has a nice dark aged patina. From an old MAINE COASTAL estate.
