Used in the Navy for early navigation and map reading and for setting courses in Civil War and other early ships. Made of nice ebony wood, connected by 2 brass hinges.Hinges are nicely pinned to the wood by brass pins. This set is particularly rare as it is both marked/dated and identified. Faintly stamped on one of the brass connectors is "USN, 64". This one is small, about 6" long and about 1 3/8" wide when closed. Both the wood and hinges have nice aged appearance and patina.
The information I received was that it was used by Engineer H. Newall, USN, during the Civil War. From an old MAINE COASTAL estate. A great addition to a Civil war collection or display. The item "RARE ID'D.
