This is an authentic Naval Cutlass manufactured by the Ames Manufacturing Company of Chicopee, Massachusetts. It is a US Navy Model M1860 and was used during the American Civil War. The serial number of 19,565 is cleanly stamped on the inside quillion (or guard).
It has a brass, closed cage guard and pommel. The leather grommet between the blade and the guard is intact and very good condition. The wooden grip has 20 grooves but does not have the shagreen leather or the brass wire wrapping as is typical. There are 10 brass rivets which secure the closed hilt cup to the hilt guard. At the base of the blade are stamped USN and the inspectors initials DR which indicated Daniel Reynolds who inspected the majority of the cutlasses.
On the opposite side of the blade is the manufactures maker mark which is faintly visible. This mark was typically not stamped deeply and in most cases is only faintly or partially recognizable. There is some very slight, very old pitting on the blade and some nicks along the cutting edge (seen in one photo) but these should be expected. Overall the cutlass is in excellent condition. The length of the blade is 26 and the overall length is 32.
